To tell the story of the performance you would have to do a deep dive yourself! The now pretty legendary performance of Mark Gonzales in Germany is one of skateboarding’s shining moments. But what does it mean… what changes if you repeat the work?

Artists have argued that every time you duplicate/execute a performance or work of art it is, in fact, a new work of art. A moment can never be recreated so every moment is a moment in and of itself. If we hold that to be true the spectators of Mark’s 2018 performance witnessed something singular, something new.

adidas, together with Mr Gonzales also made a shoe, based on the original fencing shoe that Mark wore in the performance in Germany.

The original was a fencing shoe this one is a skate shoe based on a fencing shoe. skating non-skate shoes is a tradition in skateboarding. And in this case, the result is very nice indeed!

One of the many benefits of being from a small country is that it doesn’t take a long time before you are in another country. Belgium, Luxemburg, France, and even Denmark are all relatively short drives away. But even though countries like Germany are close, crossing the border makes everything look and feel slightly different. From the colour and build of the houses up to the food, everything is similar but not the same. Me being from The Netherlands but residing in Germany noticed these things when I first came here. But as time goes by, we start to accept our surroundings as they are and stop seeing things we were fascinated by a year before. So it was great to see this video pop up and notice the excitement Wouter, Pascal, Robbin and the rest of the Skatestore team must have felt at times.

During this Skatestore tour through Germany, we drove around, skated lots of spots, travelled to new places and drank lots of beer… A trip like this sounds like an ideal skateboard vacation doesn’t it? It was my first trip with this group of people, and we travelled to the German “Ruhr Area”, which was a pretty new place for us all. The Ruhrpott consists of a couple of old industrial cities like Dortmund, Essen and Köln. We had some excellent spot guides in the friendly folks of the Obtain Company, and they served up one spot after another. During the trip, all eleven of us stayed together bunched up in an Air BnB located in Bochum (one of Nordhrein-Westfalen biggest cities). Even though things where tight we ended up giving Sebastiaan Vijverberg his very own room because he snored too loud and we needed our beauty sleep.

We started most of our days quite early and chose a daily diet consisting of iced coffee, beer and pizza. Because of the proximity to one another, we picked a new city to skate every day, and to our surprise, we got to skate many well-variated spots in all of the cities.

As far as the skating goes, I remember some pretty crazy tricks going down pretty fast! For instance, Wouter de Jong jumped on this kinked rail that no one else wanted to touch and Shajen 360-flipped a rather large set first try. Every day we all tried our best to stack some clips. Another great thing was that we didn’t stress, sometimes we stayed at a spot for hours just because we could, other times we got kicked out tremendously fast. Either way, fun was being had the whole time. To answer my first, only and most important question; Yes, it was the ideal skateboard vacation.

In honor of Dennis Busenitz, the brand with the three stripes threw a little get together to commemorate their 10-year long partnership. We flew out to München and found some time to talk to Dennis about how he ended up on the adidas, his snazzy colorways, his new shoe, growing up in Germany and Sami Harithi’s influence and more.

Today we are premiering “Welcome to Franki” a skateboard video by a young filmer out of Frankfurt named Paul Herrmann. The video was shot in Frankfurt, Berlin, Barcelona and the French capital of Paris. It gives you a good insight into what young German skaters are doing (mostly in Frankfurt and Berlin) but it also has some mainstay people like Kai Hillebrand, Valentin Cafuk, and Timo Meiselbach. All in all we back Paul in his efforts and are proud not only to host the online premiere of his new video but also to welcome him into the PLACE squad. From now on Paul will produce a monthly video column for all of you to enjoy but first things first, take a seat, make yourself comfortable, press play and welcome yourself to Franki.

Der zweite Teil der adidas #3Stripes Germany Tour feat. Lem Villemin, Lucas Puig und Dennis Busenitz unterwegs in Hamburg, Köln, Stuttgart und München. Den ersten Teil mit Na-kel Smith, Tyshawn Jones und Dennis Durrant gibt es hier zu sehen.

Über Dennis Busenitz als Skateboarder zu sprechen, ist, als würde man über die Heimspiele des FC Bayern in der vergangenen Saison berichten. Besonders wenn es auf die Schauplätze der verschiedenen Demos, wie z.B. am Kölner Kap oder dem brandneuen Skatepark an Münchens Theresienwiese ging. „Sobald Dennis einmal durch den Skatepark an der Theresienwiese durchpusht, nimmt er direkt fünf Banger in einer Line mit, dazu noch mit übelst viel Speed und superstylisch! Ja, sein Skaten bringt einfach jeden zum Staunen und auch auf der Straße ist er überall einfach rumgeskatet und hat stets eine kreative Line gefunden.“ – so Burny.

Lucas Puig war gewohnt chillig unterwegs, morgens hat er sich immer mit Kaffee und Zigarette entspannt, außerdem hat er die ganze Zeit mit seinem guten Freund Lem abgehangen, die beiden Cliché-Teamkollegen sind auf Tour schon immer ein Herz und eine Seele. Lucas ist Vollprofi und weiß genau, was er kann und was er machen will. Er probiert stets das Bestmögliche und z.B. bei dem Wheelie-Trick in Hamburg poppt er den Switch FS Shovit so hoch, dass es keine weiteren Fragen gibt. Eigentlich war es sehr windig und Lucas hat ein paar Versuche gebraucht, doch er hat einfach die Erfahrung, seinen Trick im richtigen Moment zu schaffen. Ob eine norddeutsche Windböe seinem Board so viel Aufschwung verpasst hat, bleibt allerdings ungeklärt…

Eine Zeit lang war es spannend, denn adidas hatte angekündigt, drei neue Teamfahrer in ihr Roster aufzunehmen. Derartige Plätze sind heiß begehrt, das ist kein Geheimnis, außerdem versprach die Qualität der bisherigen Teamkonstellation Neuzugänge mit außergewöhnlichen Klasse-Skills. So wurde Anfang September offiziell verkündet, dass neben Miles Silvas auch die beiden Über-Newcomer Na-kel Smith und Tyshawn Jones, die besonders durch das in diesem Jahr erschienene Supreme-Video auf sich aufmerksam gemacht hatten, ab sofort mit den drei Streifen unterwegs sind. Und diese beiden wurden auf ihrem ersten offiziellen Ausflug tatsächlich so etwas wie die heimlichen Stars auf einer Tour mit Lem Villemin, Dennis Busenitz und Lucas Puig, was sicherlich nicht nur an ihren Skills auf dem Board lag, sondern besonders mit ihrer jugendlichen Freigeistigkeit zu tun hatte.

Im ersten von zwei Videos geht es für Na-kel, Tyshawn und Dennis Durrant von Hamburg über Köln und Stuttgart nach München. Im zweiten Teil folgen Lem, Lucas und Dennis – stay tuned!

Na-Kel und Tyshawn: Besonders auffällig ist ihre Leichtigkeit gewesen, mit der die beiden stets im Takt mit Boombox über die Straße tanzten und die Leute in ihren Bann zogen. In Hamburg wurde Tyshawn sogar von einem Kid die Supreme-Cap abgeschwatzt. ‘Can I have your Cap?’, war die Frage. Tyshawn darauf: ‘No worries, here you go.’ Das Kid ist natürlich mit einem breiten Grinsen rumgerannt, O-Ton: ‘Wow, geil, die Cap kostet 150 Euro und Tyshawn hat sie mir geschenkt. Die Mütze von Tyshawn, wow, wow geil!’

Mit Na-kel ist außerdem jemand an Bord gewesen, der seines Zeichens Member der angesagten Odd- Future-Rap-Crew aus Los Angeles ist. So sind auch Fans zu den Demo erschienen, die sich aus Amerika limitierte Odd-Future-Shirts bestellt haben, die hierzulande nicht so leicht zu bekommen sind. Damit haben die Jungs dick represented, und das hat Na-Kel natürlich total abgefeiert…
