A quintessential millennial view on Berlin’s skateboard scene, by Manuel Bogner. It includes some Gen-z but mostly you get that romantic, 2007 type of view and we love it, we hope you do too!

Low Flying Birds – Fool’s Gold
This is always a weird post to make because this is a project near and dear to ourselves. It is easy to write praising words about other people because you see the effort in a more objective way. Being humble is a part of northern culture, from Scandinavia down to the Netherlands and Germany, it is considered “not done” to put yourself on a pedestal. On the other side, we have to rate and appropriately respect the work that was put in to make a video & article like this succeed.
To not post it would be a little bit like saying we don’t support and stand behind the projects we work on, which would not be true. And with people like Tjark Thielker, Malte Spitz, Joel Peck, and Nils Brauer involved it would be a travesty not to use our platform for maximum exposure.
So here it is, Fools Gold, part 2 of the Low Flying Birds series. Enjoy it!
“Bande à part” by Robin Pailler
“Bande à part is an ode to the joy of skateboarding with your friends.” More important than ever.
A film by Robin Pailler featuring Tjark, NSVC, Ilja in the main focus & a few other Cleptomanicx ambassador.
Low Flying Birds – Daniel Pannemann & Nils Brauer
To be honest, when somebody asks you who your favorite skater is you always think about the pro’s. In my case, Brian Anderson would be the most likely answer you would get back.
But if we are really are being honest, your friends are your favorite skaters, the difference being that you don’t get the joy of waiting for their parts because you are out on those missions getting some awkward BGP’s, guest tricks and hugs in for the edit. Right?
Well, when we caught wind that my friends Nils & Daniel started working on this project together, I said:
“Don’t tell me any tricks you did, and don’t ask me to come along for the filming missions.”
Roland Hoogwater, early 2019.
I wanted to have the joy of watching my favorite skaters part exactly when it dropped. And so it happened*, they went out to Hannover, Budapest, Croatia, Lissabon, Potsdam & Israel and made this project a reality and I stayed at my post and did my own thing patiently waiting until today.
When all of a sudden I got a message…rushed over to Free’s website and did like you are about to…Press play! And after that simply wait 2 more years for part 2 to show up.

*I actually cheated the one rule and got some guest tricks.
Free Skate Mag – Online Dating
We made this video as a piece to go together with our very own Daniel Pannemann’s interview in the current issue of Free Skate Mag. It was in fact Free’s own Arthur Derrien that proposed the idea of a sort of takeover/collab.
In the end, Sara Parson Texas did the interview itself and I (Roland Hoogwater) got the chance to create this video together with our staff and some of our close associates/freelancers.
We hope you enjoy the work we put in for you all to enjoy and stay safe out there in these troubling times.

Three Strikes Bowling Tournament – Photo Recap
Last Saturday something happened, a group of people honored us with their presence, their good spirits & their bowling skills. Today we recap the magic of that night for you.
Photos by Danny Sommerfeld.
Text by Roland Hoogwater.
What happened? Well, we had one of our best events ever, from a slow start, where basically everyone turned up on time, which was a bit early (not expected at a skate event) to an electric final we have you, the Berlin skate scene to thank for making this what it was!
What it was? Well, a night of surprises. For instance, a very drunk Jack Taylor together with a driven Dan Clarke making it all the way to the finals. An amazing performance from Collin McLean who bowls with as much finesse as he skates. Mark Nickels who brought his own bowling ball and wore a bowling shirt (scare tactics) and bowled steadily for the entire night, in the end, coming up short because Berlin local and adidas skater Baswti kept racking them up and knocking them down like he had ice in his veins.
When we shot the trailer he wasn’t bowling like this we tell you! He did use his patented own was of throwing the ball but it seemed like in the 3-weeks between the shoot for the trailer and the actual event he had put in the work and at the end up the night took home the 300€ prize money. Congratulations Bawsti you earned it!
adidas Skateboarding thank you for helping us and making this happen, it was a magic evening for all in attendance, skater, and non-skater together knocking down those pins together.
“Edle Herren Mixtape Vol.2” – Es muss immer weiter gehen…
One of the most amazing things we get every year is a mail by Patrick Bös announcing that he has finished yet another video. Most of the time it is an actual video part and obviously with him having a fulltime job that is a feat to respect.
But this time his e-mail put our attention towards a video by a crew called “Edle Herren” (Gentlemen) and the title surmises their attitude in a great to the point way… “Es muss immer weiter gehen…” (It has to go on…) and so they did… go on.
They went to:
Köln, Wuppertal, Duisburg, Castrop-Rauxel, Lyon, Nice, Madrid & Berlin to stack some serious clips. Enjoy!
P.S.
Our personal highlight is the fakie flip heel clicker at the 2:34 mark.

Did we ever tell you guys that we low-key really like Foosball? More about the topic bar sports coming soon.

Both Ends Burning
The hottest day of the year in Berlin was not even 24hours ago and I’m sitting on my balcony in a reminiscent mood, thinking about the longest and strongest summer I’ve had in my life – so far. Yet, the summer is just at its peak and there is only more to come. A lot of you guys probably agree that there is something extremely magical about the summer in Berlin, and my honest opinion is, that there is no city in the world more charming than the Spree-metropolis.
The ideal soundtrack for this article is also the title of the story. “Both Ends Burning” by Roxy Music – Listen to it here, while strolling through this article. As far as i know, a little Bryan Ferry here and there never hurt anybody.
This article is featuring Ace & Tate’s brand new frame the “Billy” – Thanks to everyone involved, we love you all!
This is not supposed to be a top-ten list to convince you to visit Berlin. Instead, I offer you viewpoints that will make you and your friends curious about travelling here, so you can come and make up your own mind about this European metropolis. Anyway, there are more than ten good reasons to visit Berlin. So, no need to count, is there?
If you live in Berlin and over time you managed to gain a couple of friends outside the city, most likely at some point during your friendship you will receive a message or a call from one of them. Take that call, answer the message and welcome your friends. They will take you through your own city and show it to you from a different perspective and a different mindset. Here is your chance to have a little vacation while still feeling at home.
Give your friends a while to discover Berlin on their own. You need your time and so do they. Every friendship benefits from having a good balance between seeing each other and not seeing each other. No need to reinvent the wheel here. Give them the keys to your bike or car, while you recharge your own batteries.
Bikes… when talking about bikes, you will need one! It is the perfect mode of transportation, second only to your skateboard. But sharing a bike will only last for so long. So suggest to your friends that they get a cheap rental bike, it only costs a few Euro’s a day and there is a bike rental service on almost every corner.
“Tell your friends, to get with my friends
And we can be friends.”
Biggie Smalls.
Let them meet your friends if they are not already chummy enough with your crew. Being overconfident is never a good thing and meeting new people will take a bit of getting used to. Presumably, during this process, you will learn a few new things here and there. And for most parties the rule is, the more people present, the better the chance that the party will last long into the night. “One’s a company, two’s a crowd and three’s a party” – right!?
In Berlin you can drink in the streets, there are “Späti’s” on every corner and you can get a full meal for only a few Euro’s at a Falafel-House, or a Currywurst-Bude. This is not big news to anyone but somehow it is always a topic when meeting foreigners. There are only a handful of countries in the world where you do not have to watch out for police whilst enjoying a beer on the sidewalk. Besides the drinking it is nearly impossible to stumble upon really bad food, the competition is just too strong. If you still find yourself with food poisoning in bed, you probably didn’t drink enough “Berliner Luft”.
I say all that to say this – take it easy on the partying. There is so much more to see. Although we just talked about the freedom you will have during your stay, to really enjoy Berlin for more than just a day and night you should try and be a little responsible. No one wants to see you totally hammered on the Warschauer Brücke at 09:00 o’clock in the morning.
“Both ends burning while you’re counting sheep – Hell, who can sleep in this heat this night?”
Bryan Ferry.
Berlin’s hotter than Cairo/Egypt at the moment, make sure to show your friends a few lakes around Berlin/Brandenburg and give your body and soul some rest.
Every trip comes to an end at some point. Do not feel bad about sending your friends home, we all have this one buddy who is trying to overstay their welcome.

CLEPTO – EXTENDED PLAY
Extended Play meaning:
1. extended play (record, tape, etc.)
2.an extended-play single, one of the formats in which music is sold, usually comprising four or five tracks.
Welcome to Cleptomanicx’s newest offering “Extended Play” which is aptly titled because it is in fact not a full length but also not a single.
It is a mid-length video created by Nizan Kasper who used musical terminology to give these 10 to 15-minute videos a suitable name. To strengthen the reference, he divided the project into a side-A and a Side-B with two “tracks” on each side.
Similar to an EP there is a single on this recording, and there are album cuts. Like the team montage, which features one of Denis Laaß’ best tricks ever, we guess the music reminded him of the 90’s and sparked something!
Another great album cut is Niklas’ 50-50, Nosewheelie nollie flip and David Conrads vert trick which came as a surprise to many.
But in the end, people often buy the EP to listen to the single and that single is Benny Vogel and Lars Zimmermann’s welcome part. Pop and creativity are what they bring to the table with a classic “Day before the premiere” type of ender. Let hope Hamburg is proud of what they achieved because this is not an everyday thing.
Now press play and enjoy all that this EP has to offer.

MBU Weartest Event – Adidas 3ST
Footwear is probably the most important part of a skateboarders life, every time you go to buy a pair of shoes you ask yourself a lot of questions. How do they fit, what kind of material do I want, is this the right colorway, durability or board feel, Cupsole or Vulcanized, What kind of shoe does my favorite pro wear and why? All these factors and many more are a part of the process when deciding on a skate shoe.
When adidas Skateboarding asked us if we wanted to host a weartest at our favorite skatepark. The first thing we wanted to do was invite our friends that skate for /// and some of the MBU locals we skate with. We all know “It ain’t no fun if the homies can’t have some.” So not only did everyone get shoes but dinner at the local tapas place was included as well, we truly managed to take care of everybody for a day.
When the sun set, the weather, the skating, the shoes and the food and drinks all came together to make it a fun day to remember and if you don’t know what happened? It is on the internet for all to see for the rest of eternity.

Clepto – Gran Canaria
Clepto took a boat in Hamburg and sailed to the real tip of Spain. They took Jan Hoffmann, Tjark Thielker, Lars Zimermann, Niklas and Benny Vogel who stoked us out with some strong moves and 2 great switch pushes.
Hoist the sails and press play!
Iriedaily – Wherehouse 2
Every year, during the winter months skaters in Berlin need to find a sheltered home to skate. Snow, hail, wind, rain and -15 temperatures will make even the most hardened skater go looking for an indoor location.
Some go to public parks others like to get creative and sneak in somewhere warm. This “spot” is definitely the creative kind of location and with Valle Rosomako as the gatekeeper, you are assured that things will be fun and surprising.
Place Presents – A Postcard Of Detroit
Detroit is a city in the state of Michigan, which is a place in the midwest of the United States. At one point in time, a lot of cars were being built there, hence the name “Motor City”. After the decline of the motor industry, the city emptied out but somehow the music scene remained. Just google “Detroit Musicians” and take a moment to scroll through one of the most defining lists of musicians you’ll ever come across. Stevie Wonder, J Dilla, Theo Parrish, Aaliyah, George Clinton, and Eminem just to name a few. The City has some kind of rhythm to it and our friends from Berlin, Hanover & San Francisco felt a lust to bust some moves.

Harrison Hafner is the smart guy, he brought his tools and made sure that nothing would hold him back skating a spot. We can all be proud of Harry that he’s still skating with all the dirt he has stuck in his eyeballs, after all these years of having very dirty hands. BS Tailslide in quite the muddy situation.
Nils Brauer would never leave the house without his first-aid-kit and the car you see behind the yellow rail would drive immediately to the next hospital in case of an emergency. Shortly after he landed this BS Fifty he got his full body disinfected by a nurse that was coincidentally at the scene. Tragically, she forgot one important thing and to this day, Nils is still struggling with serious side effects of touching the fence with that one hand that didn’t get the cleaning treatment. Get well soon, Buddy.
Alex O’Donahoe is a weird name but then again he is a weird guy. But in a very good way. He believes in conspiracy theories and eats quite a lot of Spaghetti. He regrets grinding that bench and actually going for the BS Feeble Grind wasn’t such a good idea either, “It’s just a lot of information for the government to have against me..” – he said. If you count all the windows of that building behind Ayo and do the analogy to the 9/11 case you might get some answers that will totally leave you shocked.
Tjark Thielker didn’t come to Detroit to break Fidi’s fucking fisheye. And he didn’t. But he also didn’t come to Detroit to skate. He was just trying to find some really cheap furniture to ship back to Berlin and he did find some cool things. Unfortunately for him, his partner Dominik couldn’t pick up the phone and they never arranged any of those shippings.
Get the NEW ISSUE 62 to see more about the “Mom’s Spaghetti” tour.
C U AT THE LOBBY – The Lobby Video 2017
We told you before that our friends from the Lobby Skateshop had something cooking for the end of the year. Now it is time for you to see what Lobby is all about. Germany’s second biggest city always dealt with some kind of an underdog position, a situation that makes it even harder to shine. The city is mad underrated and we would suggest you take a visit with your friends, go to Lobby and say what’s up. To get you motivated for your spring trip to Hamburg you should now enjoy their very first promo video.
Feat.: Benny Vogel, Nizan Kasper, Lars White, Dennis Behrens, Christoph Reinhardt, Danny Stephen, Anton Wempner, Kenny Hopf, Noah Moerbeck and Christoph Friedmann.

Augustin Giovannoni’s “It’s Over”
The year is almost over and we are looking back to one hell of a crazy year. Talking about crazy we have to mention our last summer’s French Intern Augustin Giovannoni who just dropped is 2017 mixtape featuring Franz Grimm, Joffrey Morel, Auguste Bouznad, Juan Saavedra, Yann Garin & us. Loye you, Noni <3.
