Our love for Mr. Vellrath started right here in the Place office. If you have ever had the pleasure to meet Sebastian you know that he is an upbeat type of guy who has a deep love for skateboarding. When he walked in the office this morning we all congratulated him with his 7th 30 something birthday. As he walked up the stairs he told us “If Florentin Marfaing can still drop parts past his 30th so can I”. Well 2016 will be a better year, if Sebi makes good on that promise! But until that happens we still have all these blasts from the past.

The Nike SB Berlin Open is the third and final event in the European 2015 Series. The event will take place on the weekend of the 11, – 12. July 2015. The best Pro- and Amateur Skateboarders from all over Europe and the rest of the world will skate at the Nike SB Shelter to try and win the 20.000 € in Prize Money.

Let’s call it a day! Go Skateboarding Day 2015 in Berlin was a blast. The crowd met at Civilist store in Mitte to get their goodie bags while Nike SB donated money towards a new local Skate-Spot-Project for every kilometer that was pushed on a skateboard through the streets. The route took us to the “Bänke”, the famous street spot at Warschauerstr. where another issue of Battle At The Bänke was about to go down.
This 5th issue of BATB went to the history books as Alex Mizurov and Denny Pham did so many lines, they could have filmed a whole Bänke-part on one day. It was just stunning! Also the homies like Louis Taubert, Patrick Rogalski, Sylvain Tognelli (and many more) did their best to show amazing skateboarding at a fully crowded spot. Thanks to everyone who came along to join this epic Go Skateboarding Day!

When we arrived at the Nike Store located at Ku’damm, we had our iced coffee’s ready. The sun was out and spirits high up. Nike gave us the possibility to do the city tour that we always wanted to do. Not once did we drive past tourist traps like Unter den Linden, but we got to see skate tourist locations like Kulturforum and others. Our hosts were telling us about the ABD’s, while at the same time hollering at almost every person we drove past.
Three spots were on our menu – when we got to the first spot (Spot der Visionäre) the show really seemed to start. Not just for us as skaters but for all to see.
The best thing about the Nike SB bus tour was that it not only showed skaters around the city, it showed other people the many ways skaters use the city. Win-win situation.

Hi Kirill, for the guys, who don’t know you yet – please introduce yourself: “Hi, my name is Kirill, I’m 29 years old, been skating for around 15 years. I got kind of a weird role in Patrik’s crew – I always skate on those trips but i’ve never been good enough to get tricks for the video. We know each other since his first big project “10,000 kilomoteres” that we did around 2008. First I was just a tour guide, then we became friends and he kept inviting me for his trips, I usually help Patrik with organization and coordination. I do texts for different Russian and European skate magazines and websites. I shoot with old point and shoot film cameras. For Madagascar I used my automatic Minolta AFZ for personal memories. My main job is sales manager and team manager at Russian board brand Absurd skateboards. That’s it – enjoy the photos”
Patrik Wallner has been all over the Eurasia during the last few years. Since Eurasia has been his main point of interest he barely visited anything outside of this continent. I think Madagascar was his second big project filmed somewhere else (Cuba was the first one). Since I’ve been on many of his Eurasian trips I was really excited to go somewhere new for both of us, so I didn’t think twice when he offered me to join them for this one. I took this portrait of Patrik when he was in search for lemurs, in a literal way. It took us around two hours to find those funny little animals.
Madagascar capital Antananarivo was the starting point of the trip. The night before I took the flight I had read crazy stories about crime and robbery over there. Honestly I was little scared to go there. Glad we managed to avoid any serious problems there. I am sure you can find serious troubles in that city but during day time it’s not that bad at all. We didn’t have any kind of security and cruised all around the city. The general reaction of the people was positive and there were happy to see tourists in their country. Some contrasts of Antananarivo were quite shocking and life conditions especially in poor neighborhoods looked really harsh. It was nice to witness that people don’t about smiles and happiness no matter how hard they live over there. When our societies are spoiled with IPhones and modern trends kids over there can still have fun just with an old metal can fixed to the stick.
We met this boy with tangerines a few times while skating Antananarivo – I am sure Brian Dolle was his best customer of that week. It was all about bargaining between them during their tangerine deals. Brian definitely knew the fair price for tangerines by the end of the trip.
After a few days in the capital, we took a flight to Morondova on the west coast of the Madagascar Island. It couldn’t be more of a paradise than the way we stayed: Our bungalows were right by the ocean. There were pretty much no other people around besides a few locals busy with fishing and daily routine. Good times!
The Avenue of Baobabs was the main reason we went to Morondava. The place was surreal: When we saw it in morning fog on the sunrise it looked like something from a different planet. I guess it’s one of the most special locations you can visit, it’s almost hard to believe that we were there.
We got to meet local tribe people by the baobabs. I think it was great experience for both sides. They discovered skateboarding and pushed on our boards and we checked out their lifestyle and daily routine that looked like something you usually see in geographic movies on TV. We hung out together for couple hours.
Somehow we ended up coming to Morondova right for the biggest beach party of the year. The local DJ invited us during the lunch to come back later and we couldn’t resist to do so. Pretty much the whole city was there dancing, drinking and having fun. Look how happy Barney Page and his new friends looked like. We even went for and afterparty to a local club and danced barefoot.
This might be my favorite shot of the trip. I like that mom who has her baby on her back but dance and drink beer at the same time. I started dancing with her and I felt like her friends were so stoked that they even wanted to marry us after the dance. Maybe it was just my misunderstanding…
This was my first trip with Wilko and unfortunately the last one too. I had heard about him from Patrik and Danny before and was looking forward to travel with him. He brought this metal musical instrument with him and the moment when he played it for the tribe people under the baobab was one of the highlights of the trip. With his music it was almost like a meditation session for all of us. I could feel that Wilko was a bit in his own world all the time but people like him definitely do our big world interesting. I am glad I got to know him. R.I.P

April in Berlin ist, hat die Möglichkeit den Full Part schon vorab zu sehen – Nike SB lädt zur Weltpremiere in die Urban Spree Gallery, wo es neben dem Part eine Ausstellung zu sehen geben wird – die Bilder dokumentieren die Zeit, in der Denny für den Part gefilmt hat. Es gibt Musik und Drinks, ein Food Truck steht ebenfalls bereit – es soll euch an nichts mangeln. Der Eintritt ist frei – wer der Veranstaltung bei Facebook beitritt, steht automatisch auf der Gästeliste.

Die mittlerweile siebte Mondays Montage aus dem Nike SB Shelter fasst in knappen zwei Minuten zusammen, welche Tricks in den vergangenen zwei Monaten in der Halle gefallen sind. Dieses Mal mit von der Partie: Denny Pham, Farid Ulrich, Sylvain Tognelli und Nepomuk Herok, der den bislang wohl längsten BS Lipslide in der Halle eintüten konnte…
Der zweite Teil von Patrick Wallners “Melodies for the Lemurs” Doku ist online. Madagaskar hat scheinbar alles andere als viele fahrbare Spots zu bieten, dafür viel Gastfreundschaft und Begeisterung – die einheimischen Kids jedenfalls waren bei jedem geschafften Trick völlig aus dem Häuschen. Strahlende Gesichter sind mehr Wert als der nächste Banger. Barney Page, Denny Pham, Nestor Judkins, Wilko Grüning, Brian Dolle und Gosha Konyshev haben sich jedenfalls richtig Mühe gegeben und das Beste aus den “Spots” herausgeholt – seht selbst:

Nach Madagaskar zu reisen um dort Skateboard zu fahren, klingt nach einem ziemlich aberwitzigen Plan. Barney Page, Denny Pham, Nestor Judkins, Wilko Grüning, Brian Dolle und Gosha Konyshev haben sich darauf eingelassen und der afrikanischen Insel Ende letzten Jahres einen Besuch abgestattet. Kein Skateboarder wohnt in Berlin näher an der Skatehalle und dem PLACE Office als Denny Pham. Trotzdem bekommen wir unseren guten Freund viel zu selten zu Gesicht, außer wir würden ihn gerade bei einer seiner famosen Shelter-Lines unterbrechen. Auf die Frage, wo er sich denn in letzter Zeit so rumgetrieben hat, muss er selbst kurz überlegen und dann heißt es Zypern, Puerto Rico oder Tampa. In Wirklichkeit aber ist er ein häuslicher Typ und wir haben die Gelegenheit an diesem sonnigen Februartag genutzt, um zu fragen: Wo warst du eigentlich und was hast du da gemacht, Denny?

Ich saß auf einer Bank an den Bänken.

Vor einer Minute stand ich auf dem Mittelstreifen an den Bänken und habe mich abfotografieren lassen.

Im wunderschönen PLACE Büro, wo mir ein frischer Pfefferminztee angeboten wurde, der doch eigentlich eher billig geschmeckt hat. Außerdem habe ich mir mal ein kleines Update geholt, was es so Neues in der Skateszene gibt.
… vor einem Tag?
Ich hatte einen Termin, aber wo war der nochmal? Mein Kurzzeitgedächtnis ist nicht so gut… Ansonsten habe ich den ganzen Tag nur Zuhause gefuttert und bin abends noch mal für eine Stunde in der Muckibude gewesen.
… vor einer Woche?
In Berlin – da war es noch nicht sonnig, sondern arschkalt. Ich war hauptsächlich Zuhause und hab mich um meinen Fuß gekümmert, ansonsten war ich im Nike SB Shelter oder habe mir überlegt, wohin die nächste Tour gehen wird. Ich habe auch schon ein Ziel: Tel Aviv!
… vor einem Monat?
Da war ich auf Zypern auf Montagearbeit mit Alex Mizurov, Vladik Scholz, Julius Krappe und Daniel Wagner. Da war es schön warm, als wir in den leergefegten Touristenorten Skaten gewesen sind.
… vor einem Jahr?
Da war ich aufgrund einer Bänderdehnung verletzt und saß in meiner alten Wohnung im Prenzlauer Berg.
… vor fünf Jahren?
Da saß ich wahrscheinlich gerade im Team Titus-Van auf dem Weg nach Münster.
… vor zehn Jahren?
Höchstwahrscheinlich in Rostock im Skatepark in der August-Bebel-Straße. Da wurde auf recycelten Plastikrampen abtrainiert.
… vor 15 Jahren?
Ich war in der neunten Klasse, es war mein vorletztes Jahr in der Schule in Rostock. Da habe ich auch mein erstes Board von meinem Banknachbarn Eddy bekommen! Er war BMXer und fand Biken viel geiler.
… vor 20 Jahren
Wir sind gerade frisch aus der Stadt zurück in die Platte gezogen, ansonsten habe ich Nintendo und Fußball gespielt.
… vor 25 Jahren
Kurz vor der Wende habe ich in Muttis Bauch gewartet, bis die Mauer endlich fällt und als es soweit war, bin ich auch schon gekommen! Kurz nach der Wende wurde ich geboren…
In einer neuen Folge #Mondays feuern Farid Ulrich, Denny Pham, Danny Sommerfeld, Giorgi Balkhamishvili und viele weitere Akteure durch den Nike SB Shelter. Besonders freut uns der Auftritt von Alex Siegfried, der sicherlich einer der most underrated Skater in der Republik ist. Auch Martin Gregor aka Monkey gibt ordentlich Gas, wie sollte es auch anders sein. Clip ab.
Eine neue Folge Shelter Mondays aus Berlin: In den letzten Monaten war einiges los in der Berliner Skatehalle – im heutigen Edit sind neben Denny Pham, Juan Carlos Aliste und Klaus Bohms auch wieder ein paar Locals aus Berlin dabei. Denny Pham hat mit seinem Coastal Business Part letzte Woche vorgelegt, jetzt zieht Vladik Scholz nach: Ganze vier Wochen nannte er New York sein zuhause und hat in dieser Zeit einen mehr als sehenswerten Part mit Chris Mulhern für Red Bull gefilmt. Für Vladik eine ganz besondere Erfahrung, die er wie folgt beschreibt: “New York hat einen ganz besonderen Vibe – man ist den ganzen Tag auf der Straße und pusht von Spot zu Spot.” – Viel Vergnügen mit diesem Part:
Denny Pham, Ben Dillinger, Christoph Radtke und Danny Sommerfeld waren im August auf großer Deutschlandtour um das 10-jährige Jubiläum von SK8DLX zu feiern. Nach den 10Yeahs Feierlichkeiten in Jena ging es nach Stuttgart, Köln und Berlin um ordentlich Footage zu sammeln, das Ergebnis seht ihr hier.
