For those of you that don’t know about Spot The Spot it’s an event that was first started by Frisco and now by same people under the Pop Trading Co. umbrella, this year the event had its 10 year anniversary. The formula stayed basically the same, a group of people gather together and skate from spot to spot having a session at each spot. the timing has stayed the same as well, every year just before the kids and the students go back to school Spot The Spot brings people together for one last great day of skateboarding. This tradition started in Arnhem for seven years before it started to travel around Belgium and The Netherlands and now in 2016 the Dutch capital was selected and thus saw its first edition.

The whole thing started at 2 with a nice crowd that had gathered in front of Ben-G skate shop. Nike sponsors the event and thus there were some shoes and some spot the spot apparel made for you to win during one of the sessions. As most of us know skaters can be unpredictable and that means that sometimes unplanned spots get skated as well, this year we saw Spot The Spot veteran Jaap van Marle try one of the “worst street gaps” in Amsterdam. Unfortunately, he did not get to ride away but it is people like Jaap that create the atmosphere that makes Spot The Spot something you want to participate in every year.

Marc-Alexandre Barbier is a young man from Paris’s suburbs, we met him and his crew out in the French capital, they are a band of young skateboarders who roam the streets. At first glimpse, I thought Marc-a was going to be a kid who only rips at spots with “good” pavement (you know the type) but I was proven wrong almost immediately interesting enough. You can tell by looking at these photos that sometimes he likes it rough, sometimes he likes it smooth but he always makes the trick look nice! I think it was Benjamin Debert who told us that the guys from the suburbs often seem to be the most motivated “They have to ride the train for an hour or more just to get into the city. So, once they get here they want to use their time to skate!”. That definitely goes for Marc-a who in our eyes is one of France’s biggest up and coming skaters and if you saw his part in the De Paris video yesterday you might be thinking the same thing! So we asked a mutual friend of ours to interview Mr. Barbier so you can all get to know him.

Hi, Marc-A so this is your first interview, right?

Yes!

We just filmed your last tricks for your « DE PARIS » video part. Can you tell me more about that ?

Yeah, I was under pressure during the last 3 months I filmed a lot with Guillaume Perimony and yourself (Augustin Giovannoni).

So can you tell me what the « De Paris yearbook » video project is about?

It’s gonna be a 10-minute video and I am going to have a 3-minute section together with Maceo (Moreau) a shared part! I am stoked! It’s my very first “real” part ever. I did some other things before but I am a lot more satisfied with this one! I did a little left over part last month for my local skate shop. As for the De Paris projects Zeb (Thomas Busuttil) and Stéphane Borgne manage that, and this video is in celebration of De Paris’s third edition.

I heard people say that Yann Garin might have a part?

That would be really sick! Yann has been my favorite skateboarder since I was a kid!

So, how exactly did you meet the PLACE guys?

I just saw some lost Germans at République, Franz, you and I went over to them and we ended up deciding to skate with them for a couple of days. A couple of months later I went to Berlin and I met up with them once again.

Have you seen the Roman’s (Gonzalez) cover for PLACE? The one he shot with his phone? How do you feel about the increasing role of the cell phone in the today’s skateboard world?

Yeah, Roman is the best! He has a great style whatever he tries to do, it’s always something cool!
Instagram used to be cool up until they decided to stretch the length of their video format from 15 seconds to 1-minute, for me 15 seconds is the right length for a for a social media video.

You were in Berlin to meet the guys from Chill or Die, right?

Yeah, I went there to visit my friend Bapt Chill, he is the owner of Chill or Die. It’s a pretty nice clothing brand, with a sick team (Matt Debauche, Benji Russel, Covo…)

Do you want to go back to Berlin this summer?

Yeah for sure! They invited me to come back to their house. We had such a good week in Berlin. There are a lot of spots, nice people, good places to hang out and good places to eat like Dunkin Donuts…(laughs)

Sounds nice! I want to join the party too, it seems to be the “Dolce Vita” (laughs). Back in the day, you went on a lot of trips you visited Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Germany, England, and Greece. What was your favorite country and what was the best trip?

Well, my father has been living in Switzerland for about 10 years now and I visit him every summer, I use to skate with Sven (Kilchenmann) and Kilian (Zehnder) a lot when I was out there!
As for your second question, all of those trips were really nice but I particularly remember a trip to Italy with the Niaks crew, that was my first “wild trip”. We traveled in a van and every night we were like “oh we don’t know where we are going to sleep tonight” it was an adventure and I really enjoyed that!

You just featured in a project for Nike SB as well right?

Yes, it is a short video for the European contest series, the clip was to introduce Paris and the Parisian spots. It was an introduction for the 2016 Paris AM contest.

Do you deliberately tweak your switch Ollies ?

Yes and No, I feel more comfortable when I tweak my ollie out! (laughs)

What kind of stuff influences you as a person?

When it comes to music I get influenced by the 90’s, when it comes to my clothing it has got to be the 70’s & 80’s and the 90’s-00’s influence me when it comes to the way I ride my board. I like some of the older videos but I also like some of the newer ones that get released on Thrasher.

I notice you like to shop at second-hand shops

(laugh) Yeah, I like to shop there because you can find all sorts of things!

Like colored jackets?

I found an old-fashioned Nike jacket in Berlin and I was like “wait everybody I want to go in this shop… I think”.

You almost have your baccalauréat (the French high school diploma).

Yes, I haven’t worked that hard this year, because I am obviously always thinking about skateboarding and I am under some pressure to get it but I think I’ll manage!

So what do you want to do when you get out of high school?

I want to go to a design school, The first year they let you experiment and we get to try a lot of different courses. It is going to be cool!

So does that mean that you wanna stay in Paris for the next couple of years? How do you feel about Paris at the moment?

Paris is cool the scene is sick, I have my crew with Franz, Martin, Maceo, and you (Nnoni)! But there are always multiple crews out and about so we tend to skate with everybody, it’s really nice !

One day before the Street League event in Munich, I had the chance to meet Sean Malto for a quick interview in the relaxed atmosphere of the SHRN store’s backyard. Among other things we especially talked about his recovery, his friendship to Mike Mo, and also the rumors that he is off Girl. Sean is a really nice guy and it is good to see him being back with such a confidence!

I read about that you traveled a lot during the time you were injured. How was it like to experience other countries without being able to skate?

Yeah, well, when I did get hurt and get surgery and was forced to not skate I did not want to stop traveling. You know, I love traveling. Obviously, I love traveling for skating but if I couldn’t skate like of course I want to go hang with my friends. I don’t want to be like cooped up in a house. I’d loose my mind. So yeah, I did ended up going to went on a Europe trip through a few different cities in Germany and then I went to Australia, too, for like two weeks. Then I ended up going to Spain for only a few days but all those trips just like made the time go by a little faster. You know, in my head I was like “come I just wanna go hang with my friends, this gonna be sick to go travel” and when I got there I just got frustrated that I can’t skate. You know, because for us the quality of a city is based on how good the skate spots are. But yeah, it is still cool to see other sides of a city besides the best handrail it can offer or ledge spots and stuff. It was cool like to visit restaurants and see shops and being just like an average tourist.

So you mostly followed your friends on their tours or did you also travel alone?

Basically just followed them on tours, yeah, whatever they did. I did not go on a lot personal trips because I just tried to surround my self with people.

As you said you visited a couple cities in Germany, is there something you particularly enjoy to look back upon?

Oh yeah, I had a lot of really great experiences in Germany! I drove a Porsche on the “Autobahn”! That was amazing! I think that maybe was in Stuttgart years ago on a Girl trip when we were filming for Pretty Sweet. The distributor hooked up three Porsches and we took them to the “Autobahn” and could go as fast as we wanted. That was insane! That is really one that sticks out in my mind just from any trip.

You know Denny Pham right? Do you know he is sometimes called the German Sean Malto? What do you think about this?

Oh, I did not know this! Hey, I am honored because I love his skating and I think he is an awesome dude, very talented. That’s really funny because I went to Thailand with him and been on countless Nike trips with him… Yeah cool, I am totally fine with that comparison!

Ah, yeah! He just told me the story how you met in Thailand!

Yeah, this was probably three or four years ago. I was in India for two weeks with Mark Suciu, Partik Wallner and Sebo Walker. The trip was coming to an end but we all were kind of like “let’s go to Thailand” because it is just close and we could hang out and skate there a little more. So we went out there and met up with Denny and just had a good time.

Talking about friends of yours. I know you and Mike Mo have been close friends since you both got on Girl and now you both went through very bad injuries. He probably was hit even harder than you were. So are you both still in contact with each other? I am asking because Mike Mo is not able to really go skate I think but you are?

Well, obviously, you know, our friendship goes beyond skateboarding. I talk to him once a week at least and I still see him as often as possible. He is my best friend and so I check upon him and always talk to him but it does suck because he was my road dawg like we traveled a lot together and me and him roomed together every trip. So not having my roommate there and not having my skate buddy is sad. But, you know, his health is getting better. He is progressing and hopefully he’ll be back to is original self very soon, which I am excited about. There are just a couple little things but once they are healed up he gonna be 100 percent. It’s gonna be awesome because he definitely is one of my favorite skaters as well.

Good to hear that! How about you? How is your recovery going?

Oh, my recovery is good! You know, I think healthwise I am 100 percent but mentally I am still like… You know, there are things that scare me that probably wouldn’t scare me before. I am a little like worried when it come to dangerous situations in skating but my health feels good, my ankle feels good… So it is just skating, you know, pushing myself to get rid off this mentally. I ate a lot of shit. I fall a lot. Knock my teeth out, broke my collarbone a couple times, had knee surgery… But whatever, that is skateboarding.

You know that there are rumors about you being off Girl?

Yeah, I just found that out! I think it is really funny because I went on a trip with just some of my friends that are just on other companies but I just want to hang out with them and that kind of led to these rumors. All I can say is, that I am still very much in love with Girl and I am very satisfied with where I am. So I don’t have any complains. See me at the park tomorrow and I’ll show off my Girl board as always!

Well, last but not least, as you are next to Karsten Kleppan and Stefan Janoski himself the face of the recent Nike SB Janoski Hyperfell campaign, how much have you been involved in the developing process of the shoe?

Well, obviously Nike always tries to listen to the voice of the athlete. They do this in every category and so with skateboarding it is the same thing. You know, we have a good dialog with the designers and we are always talking about how to keep progressing and making awesome shoes that look cool and perform well. So the Hyperfeel is just one of those things that kind of came together perfectly. It’s cool that it feels like a slip-on but it has the protection of a normal shoe. That is what I like about it the most!

So thanks for the interview, I wish you all the best for the Street League event tomorrow and have a good time in Munich!

During the SLS Nike SB World Tour event in Munich, Germany, Nike SB released their very new version of their probably most successful skate shoe ever, the Janoski Hyperfeel. To celebrate this in an adequate manner they invited everybody to Munich’s most infamous skate shop, the SHRN. There one could meet some of the pros for a natural talk, watch a little photo exhibition by Conny Mirbach and have some drinks and burgers, which were served out of a food truck. They also premiered a little short movie for their new shoe, which you can find below as well as a little snap shot recap of the event.

After countless votes, a final draft and, Go Skateboarding Day, it was finally time for the new and improved DSS to be opened for the public. To celebrate this event, Nike SB invited everybody to destroy the park (not literally of course). People from all over came to a spot that is named after poop only to find out that the end result was the shit! In the end, your votes ended up creating a real nice location for us all to skate and that is what we did skate!

Yesterday the much anticipated Project DSS was completed! To celebrate this in an adequate manner, Nike SB invited everybody for a first open session. After starting with a shoe release event of a Nike SB and Skate Mental collabo at the Civilist Store a shuttle bus directly took the crowd to the brand new skate park. Hundreds of skateboarders and other bystanders gathered together to either skate or just watch this outstanding result of so much passionate work. One could clearly tell from the excitement that the park even outranged the high expectations! With a best trick contest with altogether 1500€ prize money the park was officially inaugurated. Afterwards, the session went on until sunset while drinks and pizza slices were served and music was played. I think I can speak for everyone if I say that the whole project was a great success and brought Berlin for sure its new place to be!

Every year with the beginning of summer on June 21st (the longest day), skateboarders all around the globe meet up to celebrate the international Go Skateboarding Day. For this reason, Nike SB once again organized a whole event in Berlin. This year was different because of the Project DSS connection, the day started at a classic spot and ended at what will probably be one of Berlin’s new hotspots for the next years to come! On this day, Polendenkmal was host to the first best line contest and, people definitely went off! Some NBD lines were made with considerable ease and style. After that, we cruised down to eat and skate the DSS. Watch the video and see exactly what the atmosphere was like, who did what and who rolled away with the prize money.

Since I got to know Denny almost ten yeas ago, he is on a constant rise. As he is the skate buddy who “made it”, I followed every step of his career and although I am all too aware of his qualities he still manages to surprise me whenever we meet causing me to speculate where all this might lead to one day. Well, only god knows! But let’s find out how Denny himself sees his near and far future.

…one second?

I will sit on the couch between my girlfriend Sara and our cats while watching the European Football Championship round of 16 game Switzerland versus Poland.

…one minute?

I will watch the first half of the extra time.

…one hour?

Probably drinking beer at the summer garden of the Nike SB Shelter while watching the next round of 16 game Wales versus Northern Ireland.

…one day?

Most likely hanging around at one of Berlin’s skate parks before I of course going to watch Germany against Slovakia at the summer garden.

…one week?

I am going to be in Munich to watch Street League there and hopefully meet some good friends that I haven’t seen for a while.

Since there will be neither European Football Championship nor World Cup, I am pretty sure you might find me skating the “Bänke” or “Polendenkmal”.

Then I’ll be 31 and finally start learning how to skate transitions properly.

I will assist the extension of Berlin’s Dog Shit Spot, which in 2026 will continued to be built out of the ruins of the “Berghain” club.

After I lost all my belongings to Yannick and had to start from scratch I will invent the revolutionary “Phamski”, a multifunctional device that is going to make the heart of every do-it-yourselfer beat faster… or so…

…25 years?

After my loss against Yannick and the “Phamski” turned out to be a total flop, I of course will not surrender and finally will reinvent myself as a physiotherapist.
Due to the declining techno scene since the end of the “Berghain” club, I moved back with my family to the outskirts. Here we regularly throw nice garden parties so come by! Future looks bright!

This event will be celebrated with some great skating by the Civilist, Nike SB, and Skate Mental teams… but at the same time, the event will be a Pizza party! The last couple of weeks the people of Yamato Living Ramps and their volunteers have been working around the clock and in all sorts of weather conditions to present you with a new and updated version of the DSS.

When the spot was fully crowded everybody was invited to an open session down the stair sets. As Berlin has plenty of very talented riders, one could of course expect an exciting show. But what went down was far more insane than any exaggerated prophecy. The level of skateboarding I witnessed yesterday was just unbelievable. NBD lines were done within minutes and with every trick down the eight and nine stair set the steps seem to shrink more and more.
As the session was finished, everybody set course for the Dog Shit Spot at Warschauer Straße where then food and drinks were served, the results of the votes of the project DSS events were revealed, and another best line contest was about to go down. Moreover, one could have a view on the site of the new skate park and the construction plans got introduced by the man Lennie Burmeister himself.
All in all, it was an outstanding Go Skateboarding Day that seeks its equal.
