I clearly remember when this project started, I was talking to Leon Rudolph and I asked: “Why don’t you do full-length videos anymore?” He answered: “Right now, I just don’t want to wait to put something out.” Leon did do a lot this year, he did some stuff for Converse Cons, Cleptomanicx and a couple of independent short videos. So an idea crept into our mind, what if we ask Leon to remix his 2016 work into one longer project? He loved the idea, and from that moment we started to talk regularly about the project, Leon would bring up ideas and started working on the project, he even found a date and a location to premiere the project. Yesterday the video had its premiere in Kassel it premiered together with Jonathon the Dog’s new project. So with, that out the way we are proud to introduce to you Leon Rudolph’s newest project “U Already Know” for PLACE, Enjoy!

In the office, we are big fans of Jan, especially since he found himself a fitting pair of trousers that he feels comfortable in. This is talent speaking – congratulations, Dolphin! As part of the events in the run-up to the Nike SB #ProjectDSS, the winners of each stop had been invited to participate in an exclusive session together with the German Nike SB team riders at Nike Town Berlin. Afterwards, everybody got the chance to design an own and unique Nike iD shoe that should be inspired by the #ProjectDSS. Below you can see the four best designs picked by Jan Kliewer and Lennie Burmeister from Yamato Living Ramps. To create your own Nike iD shoe go here.

“The white color stands for the new thing, creme for the dog piss, yellowish for the slappy curb, green for the trees of Berlin, black for the marks the skaters are going to leave at the new spot and, last but not least, L.O.O.Q.H stands for “I have a hot ass” in French, which, in turn, means that DSS is the hot spot of Summer 2016.”

“I kept the basic colors brown and beige fitting to the ground and sand on which the whole project was built. The black lines shall depict the rails of the train that runs right next to the DSS, and thus, belong pretty much to the general view. For the sole I decided for grey speckles, which represent the variety of people on the Warschauer Street next by and also at the DSS itself. There you constantly run into all kind of different people from diverse countries or nationalities that all come for one and the same reason – to skate together at the DSS.”

“Janoski Max Nike ID colorway in dark mahogany red like the sunset at the Warschauer Bridge above the DSS or the 1,49 Euro red wine drunk by the pseudo punks in front of the Kaisers supermarket around the corner. “Bänke Berlin” on the heels for the spot that influenced my skating, my favorite spot of Berlin in close proximity of the DSS, which, moreover, is also a spot that Jan Kliewer played a major role building.”

“Doubtlessly, shoes always contribute to one’s own presence and we skateboarders as shoe destroyers per se, therefor, are especially picky and distinct when it comes to our footwear. It has to be stylish, plain and comfortable. The same is true for the skate parks we usually spend whole days at. It’s all about comfort and plainness. A good skate park is never too cluttered with too many obstacles in rainbow colors. It should also be a place to hang with your homies and to have some beers at the end of a day. All this I tried to transfer into my Nike ID shoe design, which is quite simple but still has stylish nuances.”

Finally, Dan Schulz’s Berlin based independent skate film Oh Snap is going to be premiered on December 3rd. Here is the official trailer, which provides a good foretaste of what is to come! Oh Snap!

This summer I met William Hall by chance at my local skatepark in Berlin. His easy and light-footed skating caused my interest, so I actually asked him if he would be down to do something for PLACE with me during his stay. Unfortunately, I was pretty busy the following days, so we did not manage to shoot some photos or anything. But recently, he hit me up with this clip he and his friends from the Hollywood skate shop in Stockholm, Sweden, made during their tour in Berlin. I find the way in which they perceived the city quite interesting and the skating is pretty good, too, so I was down to post it for sure.

Today we are premiering “Welcome to Franki” a skateboard video by a young filmer out of Frankfurt named Paul Herrmann. The video was shot in Frankfurt, Berlin, Barcelona and the French capital of Paris. It gives you a good insight into what young German skaters are doing (mostly in Frankfurt and Berlin) but it also has some mainstay people like Kai Hillebrand, Valentin Cafuk, and Timo Meiselbach. All in all we back Paul in his efforts and are proud not only to host the online premiere of his new video but also to welcome him into the PLACE squad. Every year there are a lot of companies and crews that want to do a tour or to just spend a couple of days in Berlin. The skaters want to see and skate the famous spots like Kulturforum, Naga, Polendenkmal, Bänke, Frankfurter Tor and many other. Recently, the German Converse Cons team riders Daniel Pannemann, Danny Sommerfeld, and Jonas Heß met in Berlin to produce a clip, yet with a whole different approach. Next to some of the before mentioned famous spots, they rather tried to find something else, something that gives the viewer a new perspective of the endless possibilities a city like Berlin can offer. With this aim in mind, they chose the right photographer, Henrik Biemer, who is known for his unique way in which he depicts the place he calls home, whereby he is always looking for some new ways to shoot something whenever he goes out to skate.

As a skater, you know that there are two things that you are almost constantly on the hunt for, one being new boards and the other being new shoes. Sometimes you might spend your last buck on some skateable second-hand shoes just so you can keep skating. You might not care about the shoes you are skating but you should because what you wear is a big part of your style.

A little while back Supra was kind enough to send some shoes to our office. I always like to read wear tests so we tried to find the right crew so we could do our own wear test. We decided it would be cool if two good friends, Steffen Grap and Johannes Schirrmeister worked together to test the shoe. We asked Steffen to shoot the photos and Johannes was eager to try out the shoes.

As soon as Johannes slipped on the Cuba, he started to skate them and it seems like they were ready straight out of the box. We cruised around and had fun with it, finding or creating some spots along the way. After the session, I asked Johannes what he thought of the shoe and he said basically skated and held up well and he particularly liked the special edition Crown Coalition colorway (black and yellow) and the addition of the lace (most slip-ons seemed to slip off after a little while).

From the start, Supra as always had a strong image with staple shoes like the Skytop, but they also had a very diverse squad of team riders from the get go. Supra’s shoe designs are similar to their team, very diverse. The Cuba Basically is a classic slip-on that has been tweaked by adding some little extras that improve the way the shoe’s fit. The version we tested even had an ollie patch adding to the durability of the shoe.
All in all we like what the brand is doing, they are giving international guys like Lucien Clarke and Oscar Candon the spotlight, and they also seem to support their team’s other creative outlets like Muska’s venture into the art world and Jim Greco’s “The Way Out”. We feel that Supra seems to be moving in the right direction.

Tomorrow it is finally time for the long-awaited (at least by us) launch of the Aus Berlin 2015 Yearbook. At the launch event, there will be an exhibition and a video premier just to spice things up just a tad bit more. So if you want to see what happened last year in Germany’s capital head over to Civilist tomorrow around 7:30PM so you can enjoy the book, the video, and the exhibition.

Every year with the beginning of summer on June 21st (the longest day), skateboarders all around the globe meet up to celebrate the international Go Skateboarding Day. For this reason, Nike SB once again organized a whole event in Berlin. This year was different because of the Project DSS connection, the day started at a classic spot and ended at what will probably be one of Berlin’s new hotspots for the next years to come! On this day, Polendenkmal was host to the first best line contest and, people definitely went off! Some NBD lines were made with considerable ease and style. After that, we cruised down to eat and skate the DSS. Watch the video and see exactly what the atmosphere was like, who did what and who rolled away with the prize money.

Since I got to know Denny almost ten yeas ago, he is on a constant rise. As he is the skate buddy who “made it”, I followed every step of his career and although I am all too aware of his qualities he still manages to surprise me whenever we meet causing me to speculate where all this might lead to one day. Well, only god knows! But let’s find out how Denny himself sees his near and far future.

…one second?

I will sit on the couch between my girlfriend Sara and our cats while watching the European Football Championship round of 16 game Switzerland versus Poland.

…one minute?

I will watch the first half of the extra time.

…one hour?

Probably drinking beer at the summer garden of the Nike SB Shelter while watching the next round of 16 game Wales versus Northern Ireland.

…one day?

Most likely hanging around at one of Berlin’s skate parks before I of course going to watch Germany against Slovakia at the summer garden.

…one week?

I am going to be in Munich to watch Street League there and hopefully meet some good friends that I haven’t seen for a while.

I am going to be on tour through Switzerland and Austria with the SkateDeluxe team.

…one year?

Since there will be neither European Football Championship nor World Cup, I am pretty sure you might find me skating the “Bänke” or “Polendenkmal”.

Then I’ll be 31 and finally start learning how to skate transitions properly.

…ten years?

I will assist the extension of Berlin’s Dog Shit Spot, which in 2026 will continued to be built out of the ruins of the “Berghain” club.

I will play the very last round of S.K.A.T.E. against archrival Yannick Schall at “Polendenkmal”. Winner is going to take it all.

…20 years?

After I lost all my belongings to Yannick and had to start from scratch I will invent the revolutionary “Phamski”, a multifunctional device that is going to make the heart of every do-it-yourselfer beat faster… or so…

…25 years?

After my loss against Yannick and the “Phamski” turned out to be a total flop, I of course will not surrender and finally will reinvent myself as a physiotherapist.
Due to the declining techno scene since the end of the “Berghain” club, I moved back with my family to the outskirts. Here we regularly throw nice garden parties so come by! Future looks bright!

Every year with the beginning of summer on June 21st, skateboarders all around the globe meet up to celebrate the international Go Skateboarding Day. For this reason, Nike SB once again organized a whole event in Berlin.

After everybody had the chance to pick up a little “GSD goodie bag” at certain skate shops, Berlin’s world famous “Polendenkmal” was the next spot to meet. When the spot was fully crowded everybody was invited to an open session down the stair sets. As Berlin has plenty of very talented riders, one could of course expect an exciting show. But what went down was far more insane than any exaggerated prophecy. The level of skateboarding I witnessed yesterday was just unbelievable. NBD lines were done within minutes and with every trick down the eight and nine stair set the steps seem to shrink more and more.
As the session was finished, everybody set course for the Dog Shit Spot at Warschauer Straße where then food and drinks were served, the results of the votes of the project DSS events were revealed, and another best line contest was about to go down. Moreover, one could have a view on the site of the new skate park and the construction plans got introduced by the man Lennie Burmeister himself.
All in all, it was an outstanding Go Skateboarding Day that seeks its equal.

Yesterday Nike SB invited the winners of each Project DSS event plus the Nike SB team riders to an exclusive session at Nike Town Berlin. There they had the unique possibility to skate through the huge Nike shopping mall. After closing time, everyone could enjoy dinner while Jan Kliewer from Yamato Living Ramps revealed the outcome of the votings and the construction plans for the expansion of the Dog Shit Spot at Warschauer Straße. The final outcome of your votes and thus the plans for the park will be presented on Go Skateboarding Day next week. So make sure to join the upcoming Nike GSD event! Yesterday the final voting event for Project DSS went down at Ringpark. It was a great success. Once again many locals gathered together to have a say in the construction plan for the expansion of Berlin’s famous DIY spot. While everybody was served cold drinks and grilled food, the session gained momentum and many tricks went down the bigger obstacles of the park. At the end, local hero Max Obert well-deserved could take home the 500€ voucher for Titus Zoopreme, also for the pleasure of his crew mates.
